Two Oconee County men had to explain themselves Sunday after a passer-by thought they were poaching deer or hunting at night, which is illegal, according to a sheriff's report.
Turns out the men were just removing an injured deer and hadn't broken any laws.
The deputy responded about 10:25 p.m. to investigate two men loading a deer onto a pickup off Lavista Road north of Watkinsville.
However, when the deputy located the man who shot the deer, he explained that he and a companion were traveling on the road when the deer ran into the road and was hit by the truck.
The driver and his passenger got out of the pickup and walked into the field with a flashlight where they found the injured deer on the ground.
The man told the deputy he shot the deer once with a rifle.
Even in early season, deer hunting can be productive
The months of September and October are considered by many deer hunters to be the pre-game warmup for the "real season" when the rut begins. At that point, the mature bucks drop their guard and go into search mode for does in heat. If the truth be known many a trophy has been taken in the early period before the rut ever starts and it can be persuasively argued that during these two months quality deer can be taken because they are less wary (especially during the first two or three weeks) and because their patterns are more predictable. Let's take a look at some things to consider in this early portion of white-tail season.

On a cloudy November afternoon with rain in the forecast, Pete Burroughs sat inside his tidy and warm Oglethorpe County home. Through the glass window of his front door, he could see a vast field neatly mowed from a recent harvest of its hay.
Bear-hunting season passes without a kill
The 2010 deer-hunting season was good for Madison County, but in its second regulated bear season, no one has reported taking a bear, according to state Department of Natural Resources conservation officer Sgt. Stan Elrod.
