There is no other day that stirs the passion of sportsmen more than the opening day of firearms season for the elusive white-tailed deer. Everyone is out there enjoying the relaxing feel of nature while they envision bagging their personal best or even a record-setting animal.
As a bonus, many will enjoy plenty of savory venison prepared in ways that would make any chef proud.
We start the season with a spot check of how the area's hunters fared on the opening Saturday and offer an historical scorecard from years past to see what we might have in store for the coming months. A summary of some of the biggest deer in the history of Northeast Georgia broken down on a county-by-county basis is included in our opening-day analysis.
In order to get a handle on how the season got started, we contacted the owners of some of the long-time deer processing businesses in the area. Here is that report:
► Firetower Deer Processing is located at 16 Buddy Faust Road just outside of Crawford and owner Terry Perry has been in business for 14 years.
In chatting with Perry, he indicated that they had taken in nearly 40 deer by Saturday afternoon - the biggest weighing in at a whopping 205 pounds. An 11-point rack taken in Clarke County was the best of the day.
Perry was particularly pleased that he had seen youngsters ages 5-13 bringing in more deer because of recent changes in Department of Natural Resources policies. He also indicated that, compared to last year's opening d
